Stockings or Not?
TENNIS COMMITTEE MAY i ISSUE RULING FASHION FOR WOMEN (Australian and 2C.Z. Press Association) Reed. 11 a.m. LONDON, Sunday. Mr. Larcombe, manager of the All England Tennis Club, admits it is most probable that the committee will consider whether women competitors at Wimbledon shall be allowed to play without stockings. Miss Helen Wills, who set the fashion in Europe, interviewed, seemed sceptical as to whether the club would venture to issue a rule on such a personal matter. Nevertheless, she said she would not like to oppose it if there were an official ruling on the question. Senorita D f Alvarez, the fascinating Spanish player, expressed the opinion that it was out of keeping to wear a frock and no stockings.
“If they decided to wear bathing costumes for tennis, it would be an excellent idea.”
