FALL FROM LADDER

TRAGEDY AT GAS-WORKS ELDERLY MAN KILLED Receiving injuries to his head when lie fell from the top of a ladder at the Auckland Gas Company’s works Mr. Edward Thomas Avery, aged 73, died in hospital-three hours later. Mr. Avery, who lives at 78 Hepburn Street, Ponsonby, was working at the top of a 25ft ladder when he fell. The accident occurred about 8 a.m., and he was immediately taken to the Auckland Hospital by ambulance. He died shortly after 11 a.m. Mr. Avery was an enthusiastic sportsman and was a vice-president of the Kingsland Athletic League Football Club. He came to New Zealand in 1860 and. was for many yeard engaged in the timber industry at Pahi, in the North Auckland district. He entered the employ of the Gas Company five years ago. He leaves a widow, three sons and two daughters. The sons are Mr. Bert Avery, the well-known League footballer, who was captain of the New Zealand team in England, and Mr. T. Avery, of Auckland, and Mr. G. Avery, of Australia. The daughters are Mrs. E. Ryan, of 'Wellington, and Mrs. B. Woods, of Auckland.
