Today ' s Trials Were Full of Incident

Light rain during the night was followed by a heavy downpour just before dawn, and the deluge continued for about three hours. This sadly upset the arrangements ma.de for training operations at Ellerslie this morning, for after breakfast the number one grass gallop was closed. However, the hurdles on the course proper were available, and some interesting schooling was witnessed, while the 'chasers were given the use of the full steeplechase course, including the hill. There was plenty of incident during schooling operations, but no serious mishaps were recorded. The Hurdlers Comical (H. Burt) and Mister Gamp (A. Hobson) were paired once round (over 91 furlongs) over the battens on the course proper. They took the first well, the pace being right on, and then at the second Mister Gamp was over half a length in front. Here Comical made to take off with him and, slipping, crashed over the obstacle. Mister Gamp took it well, but rapped the next. The last two were jumped without a blemish, the G.N. Hurdles favourite winding up a great effort in the soft ground, the time, 2.22 4-5, being very fast. Mister Gamp executed his task in impressive style, and considering fact that he was by himself over the last three of the five furlongs his showing was even better than on Tuesday. Comical was remounted by H. Burt and jumped the last four hurdles from the seven-furlohg post, jumping slowly and carefully without being bustled. His time over the four obstacles was 510w—1.27. Both Fell Golden "Wedding (L. Husband) and Kamehameha (H. Dulieu) set oft" on a round of five fences, but they both crashed —Kamehameha at the second and Golden Wedding at the fourth. Kamehameha blundered at the obstacle and sent his rider for a heavy fall and a shaking. Golden Wedding, being ridden into her fences, which she was inclined to run down, slipped before rising at the fourth fence and Skated into it, rolling over it cleverly If not gracefully. She was remounted and completed the course. Automne (H. Jones) for a novice gave a splendid display over four hurdles, taking 1.25 3-5. He Is a promising sort of jumper. Bright Land (G. Holland) went once round over five hurdles in 2.28, rapping the second and third hard, but he cleared the last two In fine style. Glenotus (J. Sharkey) took on a couple of the pony hurdles and then did strong work on the tan. Odin (G. Holland) jumped two of the schooling hurdles on the inside, shaping fairly well.

Over the Hill The steeplechase course, including the hill, was again available, but only four ’chasers took the opportunity to cover the full course. After completing a round of the fences, Patoanui (J. Sharkey) was joined by Son o’ Mine (C. Robinson), Airtight (Pitcom) and Vexatious (A. Hobson), the quartette being in company over a circuit. All gave a clean exhibition, and Potoanui was but momentarily deprived of the lead just prior to wending their way over the hill. Potoanui’s \clever jumping gained him many friends, while Airtight also pleased. This was his first attempt over the Ellerslie country. Potoanui negotiated no less than 15 obstacles during his lesson, going round twice. On the Flat The first to work in the rain were Cunningham’s Cornwall Handicap candidates, Hyde Park and High Pitch. They were sent once round, and both revelled in the conditions. The circuit was run in 1.59 2-5, the last mile being covered in 1.51 2-5, the last six furlongs in 1.24 2-5, and the final half-mile in 56. They finished on terms, going strongly. About a quarter of an hour later, J. Williamson’s Cornwall Handicap representatives, Corinax and The Lover, were given a similar task, finishing together and being eased, in the same time —1.59 2-5, the final mile being cut out in a nice 1.50 3-5, the last six furlongs taking 1.23 4-5 and the last four 56 3-5. Vallar slipped over half a mile in 52 1-5, moving very smoothly. Dave was slow to get moving, but he returned 52 for four furlongs. He is fast coming back to form. A Smart Effort After breakfast the grass track was closed, and galloping was confined to the sand. A fine performance was .recorded by Bisox and Keddar over seven furlongs, which they covered in a lively 1.32 3-5, the last half-mile being cut out smartly in 52. Both did their work well, with Bisox the most impressive. Abbott’s Delimit and Sea Comet were sent once round, the former finishing in front in 2.5 2-5. Roman Pearl and Otranto left six furlongs behind in 1.20 3-5, and Thursby was ahead of Kawainga over the last six of seven furlongs in 1.23 1-5. Dayform ran half a mile in 54 3-5. Palmares displayed dash in running four furlongs in 53 2-5, and Adjuster took 1.25 4-5 for the last six of seven furlongs. There was a lot of other work witnessed, most of it being at half and three-quarter pace. Arrivals Today’s arrivals at Ellerslie were Valkon, Oration, Plipo, Pikimai, j Maidos and Cool Mint. These came by I boat from New Plymouth.
