Great Fields For Northerns

A.R.C. ACCEPTANCES Judging by the list of acceptances, the Auckland Racing Club’s Great Northern meeting at Ellerslie on Saturday, Monday (King’s Birthday) and Wednesday, June 3, 3 and 5, is going to be a record success. The fields for the opening day are really splendid, the number remaining in the Great Northern Hurdles, Great Northern Steeplechase (second day) and Cornwall Handicap—the big three —ensuring spirited and spectacular contests. The largest field of the day has been paid up for in the Jervois Handicap and this is almost certain to be run in divisions. The acceptances are as follow: FIRST DAY

A Likely Quartet It is understood that P. P. Neagle has four likely yearlings in work at Napier Park, one of whom is extra smart, and may be a Gimcrack Stakes candidates in Sydney. This is the Cape Horn—Sarah Grand filly, Sally Horn, a half-sister to Penman. She is said to be a ready-made galloper. Neagle also has a gelding by Hunting Song from Crisis, a gelding by Arausio from Adelieia, and a gelding by Arausii from Suratura. The two last are the property of Mr. P. F. Wall, owner of Kaiti and Kaihoro, who are also from Suratura. So Kaiti has not been schooled, and W. Bowden is to go to Hawke’s Bay to give the black his first lessons. On Holiday English breeders do not hesitate to ask big money for anything that is proved. Mr. G. M. Currie, of Wanganui, recently priced Sickle, the son of Phalaris and Selene, who finished fifth in the 1927 Derby in Lord Derby’s colours, yet broke down in the race. The answer was 18,000 guineas, so no business resulted. Mr. Currie left Auckland by the Maunganui yesterday for a holiday trip to Australia. He will see the jumping meetings, and then go on as far as West Australia, returning in time for early spring racing in the Dominion. Heroic's Half-sister

Relatives of champions always attract a great deal of attention, and one of the present season’s yearlings whose career will be followed with interest is Heroic’s half-sister, by Sea Prince, for whom the name of Miss England has been claimed. The filly’s dam, Chersonese, has for several years been represented solely by colts, and these have fallen short of the class of Heroic. Thracian has a second to Hampion in the Victorian Derby to his credit, and Cimbrian is a winner, but both have been great disappointments. Hebrus, the two-year-old half-brother to the Valais champion, is expected to show to advantage next season. Consequently, it will be interesting to see if a female relative can improve upon the deeds of the other members of the family. Another yearling of whom big things are expected is a chestnut gelding by Great Star from Maid of Somerset. This fellow, who cost 1,600 guineas at the Melbourne sales, will race as Starglint. Dick Turpin is the name chosen for the 1.200-guinea brown colt by The Night Patrol from Eumaralla.
