NEW REGENT

‘THE SHOPWORN ANGEL” Pretty Nancy Carroll, the Paramount star, is seen and heard singing a catchy love melody in the Paramount sound picture, “The Shopworn Angel,” now at the New Regent Theatre. The song is “A Precious Little Thing Called Love,” and is made full of life by the little star. “The Shopworn Angel” is Paramount’s first sound picture seen and heard in Auckland. It tells a story of a soldier boy who wins the heart of a Broadway Follies girl against a struggle of tragedy. All of the sound effects of rehearsals of a big musical comedy show behind the scenes ape included in the synchronisation. The music score, rendered by an 80-pie«e orchestra, is magnificent. One entire reel of the picture is in dialogue centred around the marriage scene. The minister, as well as Gary Cooper and Nancy Carroll, are heard speaking in the sequences. Roscoe Ivarns, the stage manager in the picture, is also heard in some good comedv laughs. Music from a full military band is also featured in the scenes showing Gary Cooper off to war. Gary Cooper will be remembered as the hero of the great air picture, “The Legion of the Condemned.” Paul Lukas, who is also in the cast as the Broadway millionaire, is a famous Hungarian stage actor. A full programme of short “talkie ’ features is also being presented. These include a talking comedy, “Jack Duffy and Sonny Boy,” a Paramount synchronised News and Pathe colour novelties, also songs by Ruth Etting, known for her singing on Columbia records. Finally there is a most novel item in which two Chinese maids, Anne Chang and Hatsu Kurae, sing a number of Eastern melodies.
