Livening Up For the Great Northerns

With the Great Northern 'meeting opening at Ellerslie on Saturday week, interest in this very popular fixture is beginning to quicken. Several South - ern horses have arrived at headquar-; ters, and therefore the training operations at Ellerslie from now on will be of great interest, especially when the jumpers get busy for their spectacular schooling tasks over the hill. By the Rarawa at Onehynga this morning there arrived Airtight and Bisox, in charge of trainer J. Brown. The latter is one of the fancied Cornwall Handicap candidates, and despite her Wanganui failure (she was hopelessly drawn in her race there) she may prove to be one of the hardest the Auckland provincial candidates will have to beat in attempts to retain the honours for Auckland. Airtight, although brought North by J. Brown, is still trained by J„ Fryer, whose last visit to Ellerslie was a success, when Bright Glow won the Easter Handicap. Mister Gamp Here Awapuni trainer J. Coyle put in an appearance this morning with a team of four—Mister Gamp (the ruling favourite for the Great Northern Hurdles), Vexatious, Keddar and Son o’ Mine. It is a good string, capable of winning more than one stake. Apparently this

trainer has decided to miss the Dunedin meeting, which clashes with the Auckland fixture.* Mister Gamp looks in great order. Iveddar has been wonderfully consistent during the past three weeks, his last five starts resulting in two wins, two seconds and a third. It was thought that Mrs. A. McDonald would be here today with Red Fuchsia, Tiega, and Mountain Crag (Elicit being doubtful), but she was not on the train. Perhaps she will arrive tomOrorw.
