RISE IN BEEF MARKET WESTFIELD STOCK SALE WESTFIELD, 2.30 p.m. A reaction from two weeks of exceptionally Heavy offerings was registered at Westfield today, when a yarding of approximately 175 eteers and 330 cows and heifers came forward. The market, as a result, was very firm, and ox beef registered an advance of up to 3s a hundred on last week’s rates. Best young ox beef made to 39s a hundred: best young cow and heifer beef to 34s a hundred. Although the ox beef yarding was .small, the average quality was good, medium-weight steers predominating. Most parts of the province contributed and a feature was the quality of the few pens of bullocks sent in on account of clients from the North. For the third week in succession the same Waikato vendor topped tho market with a line of 55 light to choice heavy prime steers. The tops went to R. E.. Stott, Birkenhead, for £l7 12a 6d. A line of five extra choice prime steers on account of A. Orr, Wiri, made up to £l7 2s 6d, the top-priced pen going to T. Baster, Ponsonby. Seven well-finished steers from C. J. Stewart, Ohinewai. made to £l6. A line of choice prime medium to heavy-weight steers on account Mrs. Main, Hautapu. made from £l3 17s 6d to £ls 17s 6d. Thirteen well-finished handy-weight steers on account Jas. Taylor, Cambridge. made to £ls 15s. Eighteen handy-weight steers' on account the Matarawa Land Company, Putaruru, made from £l3 to £l4 12s Gd. The steer market had a very firm tone throughout, and prices were such that export buyers kept right out of the market. The quality of the cow and heifer offering, generally, was not high, the sreat proportion of tho yarding being drawn from the dairj' herds of the district. By the appearance of a great many, too, it appeared as if they could have done with a longer period in the fattening paddock. Prices in thia section were very firm. One of the best lines of the day came forward on account of a King Country vendor, 24 exceptionally choice prime medium-framed young cows and heifers making to £lO 7s 6d for a pen which went to A. E. Rossiter, Papaloetoe. Another exceptionally choice prime pen went to R. and W. Helluby for £lO 2s 6d. Five choice prime heavy young cows on account of F. N. Twining, Pokeno, made to £ll 2s 6d. the tops going to H. R. Brindle. Edendale. Three extra prime cows from the Waikato went to Fearon Bros., Avon* dUe, for £ll 10s. Exceptionally heavy prime steers made to £l7 12s 6d; heavy prime, £ls «»s to £l6; medium, £1.3 7s Od to £ls; liffht and small from £ 9 10s. Heavy pnrae young cows and heifers, to £ll Rs; medium £7 10s to £8 17s 6d; light r <>ugh and plain, from £5. The market for a short yarding of calves was very firm, the demand being especially keen for well-finished, me-dium-weight vealers. Top price in the section was secured for a well-finished nmnsr on account of Mr. A. Fortune, Fakuranga, which went to Mr. T. Col--43*. Avondale, for £6 14s. Heavy-vealers made up to £6 4s, tedium, £3 10s to 4s 6d; light, from L2 18s to £3 8s; rough and plain, fi-om £2 to £2 15s: small and freshar2PPed, f rom 7s to £1 18s.
