MAORI WAR VETERAN DIES AT 104 FOUGHT IN CRIMEA (Special to THE SUN) WHAKATANE, Sunday.* At the great age of 104 years Mr. David Higgins, a Crimean and Maori War veteran, has died at Whakatane Hospital. He was born in County Waterford, Ireland. As a young man he fought through the Crimean War. and later he was drafted to Australia as a member of the garrison there. Then the Maori War broke out and Mr. Higgins was sent to New Zealand, joining up with the 78tli Regiment. He took an active part in the pursuit of Te Ivooti. Mr. Higgins was a single man and had no relatives in New Zealand. He stated that he had two nephews in Australia. About five years ago Mr. Higgins came to Whakatane from Whangarei. and had been an inmate of the hospital here ever since.
