CAR ON ROOF
Lunch-Time Visitor at W anganui MOTORIST’S MISFORTUNE tSpecial to THE SUE) WANGANUI, Today. The Alpe family were having lunch yesterday when they heard a terrific crash as a motor-car hurled on to the roof of their back verandah. As they rushed out from the kitchen they were met by a surge of water from a shattered tank. The house is in Mount View Road, Durie Vale, nestling under the Wairere Road, over which a considerable amount of traffic passes. It appears the car, which is owned by Mr. W. Mathieson, labourer, who was working on the Wairere Road, stalled. The driver attempted to crank the car but without result. He then proceeded to adjust the ignition, when the car suddenly shot forward. The owner made a grab for the steering wheel but he was not fast enough. The car dived over the hillside on to the down grade, careering through a gorse fence at a great rate and somersaulting a couple of hundred feet before lodging on the Alpe’s back verandah. The vehicle smashed a water tank and the kitchen was flooded. The four wheels of the car were smashed.
