ART EXHIBITION MANY ENTRIES THIS YEAR Eminent Australian artists have sent contributions to the annual exhibition of the Auckland Society of Arts, which will be opened in the Kitchener Street Gallery by the Gov-ernor-General on May 29. That keen Interest is being taken ; in the exhibitions is shown by the j fact that 450 pictures have been sub- j mitted for hanging. In the 192 S exhibition there was little Australian j work shown, but this year 35 pictures ! have been sent over by 31 artists. Among the contributors are W Robert Johnson, formerly of Auckland, who has become well-known for his vigorous landscape work: Sydney Long, Thea Proctor, Fred Leist and B. E. Minn 3. The contributions include both oil and water-colour work. Although there are several New Zealand artists doing distinguished work in Europe, one only will be represented in the exhibition. He is F. J. Porter, an Aucklander, who is highly thought of by the foremost English critics. Four of his pictures will be on show. An experiment which will show how far the opinions of the public and artist members of the society coincide will be provided in a referendum which is being taken. All visitors to the exhibition will be invited to name the picture considered to be best in the exhibition. A second voting system will be limited to the artists. The conditions for the art union have been changed. In the past prize-winners were allowed to make their choice of pictures up to a certain value, but this year the committee will select the first prize, a picture valued at 30 guineas. Special sections in the exhibition have been given 1:o students of the Elam School of Art, and the School of Architecture at Auckland University College. Arrangements are well in hand for the Arts Society ball, which is to be held in the Town Hall on June 18.
