FOR PLEASURE TRAVEL
RAILWAY CONCESSIONS Privileges for parties travelling by rail have been decided on by the general manager of railways, Mr. H. H. Sterling. Extended facilities for parties allow any stationmaster. passenger or business agent to authorise the issue of concession tickets. In tile past there have been concessions for pleasure parties travelling to attend tournaments as teams or as members of clubs, but it was necessary that three days’ notice of the intended trip should be given. The railway tariff provides that pleasure parties of not less than 12 members may Travel first-class at second-class rates for any journey, and. on a return journey on the same day, those travelling second-class may travel at three-quarters the usual return fare.
In the past, applications for concessions went to the district traffic manager for approval, but, under the new system, a stationmaster can grant permission or passenger and business agents can issue permits. The only proviso is that it should be ascertained if tnere is available rolling stock for the party. The new system is a result of Mr. Sterling’s endeavours to provide an improved and more acceptable service.
