His Excellency the Governor-General •,nd the Lady Alice Fergusson returned j- ro m Whangarei yesterday. To-morrow . vening his Excellency will attend a reunion of returned soldiers. and Mrs. M. Staig arrived from Sydney this morning on the Ulimaroa. Mr. Leo Du Chateau arrived from Wellington this morning on the Limited. The Rev. O. Nichol returned by the Tofua yesterday after making a trip round the Islands. Mr. H. C. Poole, who has spent sseveral months in Samoa, returned by the Tofua yesterday. .Mr. E. Casey, divisional superintendent of railways, left by the Limited last evening for Wellington. Mr. Beaumont Smith, of J. C. Williamson Filins, returned to Auckland from Wellington this morning. Mr. G. F. Thompson, a member of the present council, has been announced as a third candidate for the Taumarunui mayoralty. Mr. R. J. Anwyl, general manager in Australia for Cooks Tours, Ltd., arrived in Auckland this morning by the Ulimaroa. He is staying at the Hotel 4'argen. Mr. £>. S. Allen, Administrator of the Mandated Territory of Western Samoa, jirrived yesterday by the Tofua and left f, jr Wellington last evening to consult with Sir Joseph Ward. Lieutenant-Commander J. D. Prentice and Lieutenant H. Lovegrove have been lent to the New Zealand Division of the Royal Navy for three years, jtoth officers’ appointments date from April 12. Mr. P. Ghinchen, who has been on the staff of the Bank of New Zealand in London for the past four years, returned to Auckland to-day by the Ulimaroa. He will join the bank again in Wellington. Mr. J. V. Haskell, assistant engineer nt the Tauranga branch of the Public Work* Department for the last 10 years, has been transferred to Waikokopu. There he will be in charge of the section of the East Coast Railway for Waikokopu northward. The Hon. Sir Maui Pomare, his son, and Dr. E. P. Ellison, Director of Maori Hygiene, and Mrs. E. P. Ellison, were visitors to Otorohanga during the week-end. Sir Maui Pomare, who is convalescing after a serious operation, accompanied by his son, left Otorohanga >esterday for Wellington.
