ROAD CYCLING

SATURDAY’S EVENTS WATSON WINS SENIOR RACE In spite of the stormy weather conditions on Saturday the Manukau Amateur Cycling Club continued its road racing programme. It was previously intended to stage a race at the Mangere Speedway in conjunction with the motor sports, but when these were postponed it was decided to stage a race over the Mangere track. A 17-miles senior race and 11 miles novice race were held during the afternoon, and there were some excellent performances. The novice race was remarkable for the fine riding of R. G. Foubister, who, riding alone off the 30s mark, finished first and also returned the fastest time of 28m 555, which is only 5s lower than the record foi* the distance established under perfect conditions. H. Farrer, 2m 455, finished second. C. J. Wood. 2m 30s, third, and W. Clarke, 3m 10s, fourth. The senior race was interesting throughout, although rain fell almost continuously. Even at the end of the first lap the position was Interesting, J. Whitten, who started off scratch, riding well and looking a likely winner. However, the finish was contested by R. R. Watson and C. Harris, both off the 2m mark. Watson made a great final effort and won by. two lengths. H. Russell, also off 2m, beat Whitten for third place, and H. R. Dwight, 455, finished fifth. The fastest time was never in doubt, for Whitten rode a magnificent lone race throughout. He returned the good time of 43m
