PAPATOETOE TOWN BOARD
In consequence of a petition from a number of ratepayers from Kenderdine Road, complaining of the damage done to their property by straying cattle, the Papatoetoe Town Board last evening instructed the town clerk to refer the complaints to the ranger, with instructions to take immediate action. Mr. Smytheman, chairman, Mr. Sorensen, chairman of the Works Committee, and the town clerk were appointed delegates to attend the opening lecture of the Auckland University College on April 8, when the subject of municipal government will be dealt with. Advice was received from the secretary of the Auckland War Memorial Museum that the Papatoetoe quota of the local bodies’ contributions under the provisions of the maintenance Act was £47 16s 7d. Mr. T. R. Smytheman was nominated as a candidate for a member of the council. A request by resident* of Victoria Road for a suitable approach before the winter, was referred to the Works Committee. The clerk reported that the general fund account was in debit £62 11s 9d on March 31. An application from the secretary of the Papatoetoe Rugby League Football Club, for playing areas for the ensuing season, was referred to the Reserves Committee for their favourable consideration. During discussion on questions concerning the water scheme, the town clerk said that over 100 men had applied for employment on the works yesterday. In consequence of complaints made by the Papatoetoe Chamber of Commerce and the Papatoetoe Welfare League concerning the unsanitary state of the conveniences at the public school, the town clerk reported that the health inspector, accompanied by members of the board and a representative of the Chamber of Commerce, had inspected the site and found that the allegations were groundless. The clerk also reported that, in response to a complaint by the Papi%toetoe Chamber of Commerce, regarding the destruction of trees in Landscape Road by the board’s employees while burning refuse, the foreman had made a search of the locality and had failed to find any trees damaged. The clerk remarked on the unfairness of the chamber, making such trivial complaints which appeared in the Press before the charges were substantiated.
