TWO YEARS’ PROGRESS
ROADING AT NORTHCOTE A review of the work done by the Northcote Borough Council during the past two years was given last evening by the Mayor. Mr. A. E. Greenslade. * The first section of the highway from Northcote Wharf to through Queen Street, to the war memorial at the junction of Onewa and Lake Roads, had been completed. The reconstruction of Queen Street, and other roading work, had cost in the neighbourhood of £27,000. The reconstruction of Belle Vue Avenue at a cost of over £3,000 had brought the street up to the standard of the best residential areas in Northcote. Of great importance to the borough’s future was the declaration of the principal outlets as main highways. A subsidy on the basis of £2 for every £ 1 spent on the maintenance of the three highways during the past financial year had been approved by the Main Highways Board, and this subsidy rate will be continued in the future. After the declaration of the highways, the council lost no time in the preparation of a scheme for the extension of concrete paving through Onewa Road and Lake Road, at a cost of approximately £30,000. These proposals had been approved by the Highways Board, and a £ for £ subsidy' granted for most of the road work to the extent of £12.500. The council recorded its appreciation of the service given by Mr. H. Day, the Waitemata county representative on the No. 1 District Highways Council. Mr. Andrew Murray, the county engineer, was also thanked for his ready co-operation in all roading work.
