Movement and Colour

ST. PATRICK'S DAY CELEBRATED Monster Meeting at Domain ENTERTAINMENT ranging from athletics to singing held the interest of a large crowd when St. Patrick’s Day was celebrated in the Domain on Saturday. It was a typical Irish meeting, characterised by enthusiasm and a cheery atmosphere. The attendance is thought to have been the largest for several years past.

The scene on the oval was most striking as events of vastly different character were put through in quick succession. Everywhere was movement and colour. Green, of course, prevailed, although the bright uniforms of the Inter-House Girls attracted a great deal of attention. The energetic organisers of the meeting proffered a programme of events to suit all tastes. Apart from athletics and cycling, there was whippet racing, singing, dancing, a gymnastic display, a parade of decorated cars and fancy dresses to hold the attention of the spectators who were further catered for by a programme, largely of national music, contributed by the Auckland Artillery Band, under the baton of Mr. Wynne Smith. Cycling events were productive of some good contests, J. H. Wade, the New Zealand champion, riding particularly well in two races. Irish jigs, reels, and folk dancing by Miss Aileen Beresford’s pupils, and marching by the pupils of St. Benedict’s School, were spectacular, and the expedition with which complicated movements were carried out by the young performers, many of whom were tiny tots, speaks well for the training they had received. Whippet-racing was a popular feature, particularly a trial over 150 yards between three whippets and a greyhound, with the whippets starting 15 yards in. front. The greyhound overhauled his diminutive rivals rapidly, but, wken in a winning position, seemed to lose much of his interest in the contest and was unplaced. A pleasant Old World touch was given the entertainment when the pupils of five schools tripped a dainty maypole dance arranged bj'- the sisters of the school, assisted by Miss Beresford. A parade of decorated motor vehicles circled the oval several times during the afternoon and there was evidence of a great deal of work in the brave show they made. Walking posters, decorated trollies, bicycles and dolls prams followed the cars. Pupils of St. Stephen’s School, Parnell, had quite a large section of the programme to themselves and gave finished displays of physical drill and tumbling. A tuneful choir from the same school sang part-songs in English and Maori under the baton of the headmaster, Mr. W. C. Morris. Spectators were well posted of the results of the races by means of an efficient broadcasting service, which could be heard practically all over the ground. A late summer sun, warm, yet shielded at times by light clouds, ensured excellent weather. Lieut. Laffey, assisted by a capable band- of helpers, kept a rigid control over all events, and the programme was strictly adhered to, there being absolutely no waste of time. Officials for the day were: Organiser, Lieut. T. P. Laffey: judges, Messrs. L. Patrick, A. L. Bayliss, PI. P. Bennett; stewards, Messrs. N. Smeal and D. W. Stewart; starter, Mr. R. B. Hardey; time-keeper, Mr. W. H. Alexander; secretary, Mr. ID. M. Dougherty; treasurer, Ven. Archdeacon Holbrook; assistant-treasurer, Mr. J. G. Shanaghan; director of programme, Rev. Bro. Callixtus.
