N.Z. SPRINT CHAMPION MEETS FAST OPPONENT
A. J. ELLIOTT V. 0 MORGAN ATHLETES AT CARLAW PARK A fair attendance, a good muster of athletes and some exceptionally close finishes marked the Auckland Amateur Athletic and Cycle Club's meeting staged at Carlaw Park on Saturday afternoon, as one of the most success!, ful of the smaller afternoon meeting held this season. The competing and clinching of vie* tories by c>. Morgan was perhaps tbi most prominent feature of the afternoon’s sport. Off oyda in the 75yds handicap, Morgan, M ho is a member of i the University Club getting into trim | for tlie .blaster tournaments, breasted j the tape ahead of A. J. Elliott in 7 3-5< J In the 150yds event he was re-handi-capped and put back on 4yds, but it was not sufficient to prevent him from again clinching a victory from the iNew Zealand sprint champion. Elliott set up a sizzling hot pace from th* start in tlie latter event, and managed to come abreast with Morgan when there was 25yds to go, but the Varsity man put in a great linisii and gained his second win for the day by a yard. Proving himself such strong opposition to the .Dominion's sprint champion, Morgan, who packs a brisk start, a whirlwind finish, and runs with a good, easy style, has exceptionally bright chances in the University tournament at .blaster. The uuurter-mile event featured a wonderiul finish, the three placed men flashing past the post as one. Meredita off scratch, who dead-heated with G. iUcLeoti for first place, ran into one of tne line pegs shortly alter the start, lie ran well, and would have undoubtedly been first home had this mishap not occurred. The mile handicap was certainly not void of interest, and it saw the return to tlie track of A. J?\ Cooper after a* absence ol' nine months, die was certainly treated well by tlie liundicappcr because of not having done a deal of training, but he made a good race of it, and over the last lap speeded up to take the lead and win by five yard* from P. Witten. CYCLE RECORD BROKEN OAKLEYS FAST MiLE Press Association MASTERTON, Sunday Competing at a carnival in Masterton last evening, T.
