BACK TO WORK
BUSINESS RESUMES TO-DAY ACCOMMODATION STILL TAXED To-day thousands of Auckland workers returned to business, sunburned and fit after the Christmas and j Xew \ ear holidays. The shops, wareI houses and most of the offices have now commenced business for the year 1929. Yesterday’s comparative chilliness, accompanied by a strong wind with occasional showers, did not deter the thousands of people who spent the last day Of the holidays out of doors, i-llerslie, as usual, was popular, and the last day of the races saw a big crowd present to "pick their fancies” tor a final day’s fun. T . hl ?? e who visited the beaches found that though the wind blew the sand around and was very uncomfortable, the water was warm. The legal and accountancy firms do not resume business until Monday next a few firms remaining closed until next Wednesday. Teachers, of course, will still make holiday tor a month, though a good deal of their time will be taken up m study and in the outlining of a programme for next year. Though the holiday-makers from the oouth have commenced a general exodus, all city hotels are still filled to capacity, but there should be plenty of accommodation available next week .Some difficulty was created by the arriva! of overseas vessels during the past week or two. as a great many of the passengers had made no arrangements for accommodation. The tourist authorities had great difficulty in placing them. The congestion was so gi eat that in some cases tourists had to alter their plans and leave Auckland a few hours after their arrival, and go to places where they could secure accommodation.
