INFLUENZA’S GRIM TOLL
2,000 DEATHS IN A WEEK EPIDEMIC IS AMERICA (United, P.A.—By Telegraph — Copyright) (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) Reed. 9.5 a.m. WASHINGTON. Thurs. Nearly 2,000 persons have died of influenza or pneumonia in th-e 78 larger American cities last week. The Commerce Department reported that, beginning with 608 deaths in these cities for the week ending November 3, the list has grown weekly until it reached a total of 1,982 for the week ended December 22. Reports disclosed that influenza caused 710 deaths, and pneumonia 1,272. In the meantime, the United States Public Health Service reported 240,562 new influenza cases in 39 States for the same week. This figure was multiplied by five to give an estimated total of 1,202,510 new cases altogether, as the officials believe that the State records only comprise one-fifth of the total q^ses.
