RAIN AT TAURANGA

MANY EVENTS POSTPONED ROWING IN CHOPPY WATER (From Our Own Correspondent) TAURANGA, Thursday. Heavy rain greatly interfered with the Tauranga Regatta Committee’s organisation for the annual Bay fixture, field her© to-day. During the morning the committee met and decided to carry on with the yachting and rowing events as many boats and crews were competing after a journey from Auckland or Hamilton. The remaining events will be decided on New Year's Day. There was a fair attendance, the Tauranga Municipal Band, which played on the flagship, proving a great attra^ion. In spit© of choppy water the rowing produced interesting contests and not a few surprises. Out of nine open events, three were won by Tauranga, three by Hamilton, and the remainder by crews from the Auckland clubs. City crews were expected to do better and the big race of the day, the two mil© senior fours, was a fight between two provincial clubs, Hamilton and Tauranga, all the way. Several Auckland boats competed in tho yachting events. Results were as follow; Maiden Pair Oars. 1 mile—Hamilton (G. Taylor (str.) and N. A. Pennell (bow), 1; Auckland, 2; St. George’s 3. Also started: North Shore, West End No. 2, Tauranga, Waitemata. Hamilton led after the start and finished resolutely, winning by two and a-half lengths from Auckland, with St. George’s a canvas further back. Youths’ Fours, 1 mile—-Hamilton, G. Taylor (str.), N. A. Pennell, W. Taylor and J. Graham (bow), 1; North Shore, 2; St. George’s, 3. Also started: Tauranga and West End. Hamilton won comfortably by two lengths from North Shore, with St. George’s a length and a-half further back. Junior Pair Oars (open), 1} miles—Tauranga, C. Haua (str.) and G. Lindell (bow), 1; Waitemata, 2; Hamilton, 3. Also started: Auckland and St. George’s. Tauranga won comfortably by four lengths, with Waitemata a length in front of Hamilton. Single Sculls Handicap (open), 1 mile —W. Turner (Tauranga). Bs, 1; W. A. Stevenson (Waitemata), scr, 2: F. Conway (West End), 30s, 3. Also stadted: J. W. St. Clair (Hamilton), scr, and A. Pitt (Mercer), 30s. Turner won by five lengths, there being three lengths between second and third. Maiden Fours, lOst and under. 1 mile— Auckland, J. McComish (str.), M. J. Barrett, L. Rose, A. H. Auckland forged to the front in the concluding stages and defeated St. George’s by three-quarters of a length. Junior Fours (open), 1} miles—St. George’s, M. Simons (str.), F. Solomon, D. McGregor, I. Duncan (bow), 1; North Shore, 2; Hamilton, 3. Also started: Waitemata. Hamilton took the lead at the railway bridge and looked like winning, but St. George’s and North Shore finished very strongly, St. George’s winning by a length and a-half from North Shove, with Hamilton a canvas further back. Haiden Fours (open), 1 mile—Tauranga, G. Denniston (str.), J. Gifford, C. Hardy, G. Gotabs (bow), 1; St. George’s, 2; Auckland, 3. Also started: North Shore, Hamilton, End and Waitemata. Tauranga won by a length, one length separating second and third. Senior Fours, 2 miles—Hamilton, G. St. Clair (str.), B. Sandos, W. Bayley, E. Waters (bow), 1; Tauranga, 2; Waitemata, 3. Also started: St. George’s. A good race ended in Hamilton’s favour by a length. Bay of Plenty Inter-club Maiden Fours, 1 mile, for Allan Cup—The two Hamilton crews which were nominated withdrew, and Tauranga, G. Dennison (str.), J. Gifford, C. Hardy, J. Gibbs (bow) rowed over the course and were awarded the race. Double Sculls (maiden), 1 mile—Auckland, G. Cleal (str.) and W. H. Eaddy (bow), 1; Tauranga, 2; Waitemata, 3. Also started: St. George’s. Auckland won by six lengths. Four lengths between second and third. YACHTING AND POWER-BOATS Tauranga Outboard Championship—S. Ford’s ”U-Devil.” Four started. Second-class Keelers Handicap—Mahaki, 1; Queenie, 2; Janet, 3. Four started. First-class Keelers Handicap—lorangi, 1; Nga-Toa, 2. Mullet Boat Handicap—Starloch, 1: Celox, 2. A protest was entered against StarJoch for rounding a mark on the wrong side. Three started. Tauranga Midgets Handicap, 7-footers —M. Cambie’s Bovril, 1; G. Co Hard's Zey, 2; K. Andrews’s Pal, 3.
