CABLE SHIP TO SAIL
NINE MONTHS IN PORT REPAIRS TO EASTERN LINE Having been moored off the Cable Board’s? at Devonport for nine months, H.M. cable steamer Iris will sail probably next Thursday to repair a fault in the Eastern Extension Company’s cable between Wellington and Sydney. The fault is estimated to be about 300 miles from Wellington, and all haste is being made with the shipping of stores so that the vessel may sail as soon possible. Nearly 60 extra men have to be engaged to supplement th& present skeleton crew. Shortly after'the Iris returns she will go to Cook Strait to make repairs for the Telegraph Department, two of the department’s six lines between the Islands being out of repair.
