“SHOO” TO LION
DUKE WAVES HAT AT BEAST PRESENCE OF MIND CAPETOWN, Dec. 16. Two excellent stories of the Duke of Gloucester are told by a correspondent of the “Cape Times.” When the Duke emerged from'the jungle in Central Africa he made for the nearest bank to cash a' cheque, which he presented himself. It bore the signature, “Henry.” “Who is Henry?” asked the teller. When the Prince said he was the Duke of Gloucester, the teller asked why the Duke of Gloucester signed his cheques “Henry,” and referred him to the manager, who eventually was satisfied as to his customer’s identity. While they were in the jungle the Duke and an equerry saw a slight movement in the bush, the Duke averring that it was a lion and the equerry that it was a hippopotamus. The Duke went off to ascertain, and having rounded a large anthill found himself confronted by a large lion three feet away. With great presence of mind the Duke said, “Shoo!” and waved his hat, whereupon the lion, after a moment s surprised gaze, peacefully trotted off.
