SOUTH WAIRARAPA TROTS

NATIVE HERO WINS CUP W. HUGHES IN GOOD FORM (Special to THE SUN) MASTERTON, Wednesday. The showery weather experienced at Carterton to-day for the opening of the South Wairarapa Trot- . ting Club’s summer fixture, affected the attendance, with the result there was a decrease in the totalisator turnover, £6,873 being recorded against £8,949 on the corresponding day last year. With the exception of the two events for the square-gaited fraternity, good fields faced the starter and were productive of interesting sport. The Cup proved a “soft thing” for Native Hero, who gave nothing else a look in to win by nearly a dozen lengths. W. Hughes was the most successful reinsman, steering Tamahere to victory in both trotting heats and scoring a surprise victory with Gang Awa in the Trial Handicap. D. Nyhan was also a dual winner with El Direct, and the Auckland representative, Realty, scored a decisive victory in the Boxing Day Handicap.
