THELMA WINS BIG RACE

SATURDAY’S HARBOUR EVENTS SQUADRON’S PROGRAMME j A good sailing breeze from the north ; made conditions favourable on Saturday afternoon for the harbour programme sailed under the control of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron. Three races were held for A and B class keeler yachts and class M patiki IS-footers. The course for the keelers was from the starting-line at the King’s Wharf, round the Bastion beacon, thence round the Saltworks beacon in Rangitoto Channel, thence to the Bastion, thence out to Saltworks, thence back to the Bastion, finishing at starting-line. Unfortunately, the keeler race was marred by a bad start, two yachts beating the gun and being compelled to return. The remaining races were started excellently. The finishes were not exciting, but the results showed the success of the handicapping, and good times were made. The results were as follow: A Class —lorangi (3m), 5.12.1; Thelma (Sni 30s>, 5.17.20; Ariki tscr), 5.17.39; Rawene (9m), 5.19.10; Prize (12m 30s), 5.22.49; Nga-Toa (Sm), 5.23.44; Victory (31m 30s), 5.24.41: Moana (12m 30s), 5.25.42. The result was:—Tlielma, 1; lorangi, 2; Rawene, 3. B Class —Kotiri (ser), 5.49.25: Waione (lm 30s), 5.51.56; Wairiki (6m 30s), 5.56.40; Windward (4m), 5,59.12; Scout (8m 30s), G. 4.42. The result was:—Kotiri, 1: Wairiki, 2; Waione, 3. M Class. —Manene, 4.14.00; Maiatea, 4.14.54; Matarere, 4.17.04; Maroro, 4.15.23; Mawhiti, 4.20.30.

BRISK YACHT RACES

SMALL BOATS IN ACTION VICTORIA CRUISING CLUB The two harbour races held on Saturday by the Victoria Cruising Club for mullet boats and small yachts were sailed in excellent wind and water conditions. Launch and outboard races, which were also on the programme, were cancelled owing to insufficient starters. Both sailing events were started and finished off the Harbour Board’s jetty, in the St. Mary’s Bay boaj. harbour. The £resh northerly drove the competitors round the course in a little over half an hour. From the starting line the course took the boats round a mark in Shoal Bay to the Bona buoy, and back to the finish, a distance of about three and a-half miles. Finishing times and results were as follow: Mullet Boats (all classes). Finishing times were:— Starlight (ser), 3.14.50: Spray (Jmin), 3.16.41: Valeria (3min), 3.16.59; Starlock (scr,), 3.17.25; Wairere (6min), 3.22.23; Mistletoe (6mm) 3.22.35; If Not (lOmin), 3.24.39; Mowai (7min), 3.24.41. TAKAPUNA BOATS ACTIVE

TRIAL RACES CONDUCTED ' Three races for 12ft 6in yachts were held on Saturday by the Takapuna Boating Club. The first event was a handicap contest. Following that, two trial races were conducted to select Auckland’s crew to defAd the Cornwell Cup at Lyttelton on January 19. Seven boats faced the starter. In a good start Belphine was first over the mark, closely followed by Kitty and Trevic, Tio, Ace and Suzette bunched, with Ripple just behind. The boats laid a course to the buoy at Northcote. Belphine was leading on the first round, followed 14s later by Kitty. Ace, Ripple and Tio followed at intervals. The first boat to finish was Kitty, at 4.59.10, followed by Belphine at 4.54.52, and Ace. 5.1.46. these being the only boats to finish, the others withdrawing owing to minor accidents. Placings were; Kitty 1, Belphine 2, and Ace 3. A protest entered by Belphine against Kitty will be decided by the Sailing Committee. SELECTION TRIALS In the first race Ace, with G. Carter and E. Burt as crew, was the first to finish, followed by the Belphine. with Rodgers Bros., and the Kitty, Ripple, Trevic and Tio. in that order. This was a magnificent struggle between the first two boats, each alternately leading till the finish, when Ace finished Is ahead of Belphine. The second trial was won by Kitty, crew T. Tabateau and T. Johnson, followed by Belphine, G. Carter and E. Burt. Then came Ace, Tio and Trevic, in that order. A further trial will be held this evening at 6 p.m., on the club’s course.

PANMURE BOATiNG CLUB

A race for open yachts and one for outboards was held by the Panmure Boating Club on Saturday. The sailing race was won by Toreai with Tui second, and Ben Machree third. Tui has protested. Miss Arawa was successful in the outboard event.

WELLINGTON TRIAL

WIN FOR MISS JOSEPHINE Press Association WELLINGTON, Sunday. Miss Josephine won the Sanders Cup trial at Wellington yesterday. Clyde was next, followed by Wellesley I.

COLLEEN WINS AGAIN

SANDERS CUP TRIALS Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, Sunday. In the third Sanders Cup trial at Lyttelton yesterday Colleen beat Usher and Secret. Colleen now has two wins and one second to her credit.
