COST OF DRY AMERICA
REPORT BY COMMISSIONER BIG FIGURES QUOTED (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) WASHINGTON, Thursday. Mr. Janies M. Doran, Commissioner of Prohibition, to-day informed the Appropriations Committee of the House of Representatives that the effective policing of the United States and the enforcement of the Prohibition law would cost £60,000,000 a year, whereas the appropriations for the purpose in the new fiscal year will only be £8,000,000. The Commissioner said it was a matter of policy whether Congress wanted to embark upon the police business. If so, it would take £60,000,000 a year and a system of courts throughout the country.
