ROAD REPORT

DRY CONDITIONS AND RECONSTRUCTION WEEKLY BULLETIN The Auckland Automobile Association issues the following report .on roads giving conditions as they existed yesterday. AUCKLAND TO WHAN GA RE I. — Extensive alterations are being carried out by the Alain Highways Board and these will still render the Puhoi-Wark-worth section of this road difficult in wet weather and motorists are therefore advised to travel via the West Coast. The graders are at work further north round Mangawai and a further improvement is expected between Mangawai and Waipu. AUCKLAND TO DARGAYILLE. — The west coast route is advised for motorists travelling to Dargaville, as the section between Wayby and Wellsford is under reconstruction. North of Wellsford, between Kaiwaka and Te Hana, difficulty will be experienced in wet weather owing to formation of deviations, cutting back of corners and new fillings. THE FAR NORTH.—Conditions are steadily improving in the Far North and motorists are now passing through the Mangakawhia Valley, although surfaces are somewhat rough. Approaches to bridges in the valley are in poor order and would require chains and very careful driving after any rain. The route from Whangarei to Kawakowa affords the most comfortable travelling. Many cars are passing through the Waipoua Forest, which has been greatly improved since last season. On all routes chains are required if there is any rain. Traffic is also travelling between Kohukoliu and Broadwood and Kaitaia, and conditions are favourable. There is still a clay gap and this only will need chains in the wet. An all-weather highway is provided from Kawaltawa to Kaitaia, via Maungamuka. SOUTH AUCKLAND.—The Bombay deviation is now open for traffic, but motorists should avoid this route if there has been any rain. Undue use of tho road will unnecessarily disturb the surface and cause roughness when it has dried. POKENO-PAEROA. —The road surface is very much improved and is entirely metalled. HAMILTON - COROMANDEL. Several sections are a little uneven, but on the whole the maintenance shows an improvement. AUCKLAND TO ROTORUA. —This is now an all-weather route and

motorists are experiencing no difficult* - or discomfort. BAY OP PLENTY.—The roads in th Kay of Plenty are now in their usual summer condition, but after rain chains may be necessary between Te Pulse* and Taurausa, where the surface is rough, and also on the clay portion of the Waihi-T&uranga Road. This latter road is deeply rutted in places and motorists should bo advised to tnivcl over the Kaimai Hills and Matamat.i in wet weather. TAUPO ROADS.—Tirau to Taup«» Road is in good order to L»ichti%}d. bui very bumpy from Tokoroa to Atiamurj. Roads are in good order from Atiamuri to Taupo. It is advisable to carry chains in case of very heavy rain. Graders and reformation work is carried on one mile north of Wairakei. Motorists should exercise care past, new work. TE KUITI TO TAUMARUXUI AND OHURA. —The roads in these districts, although drying fast, are very rough, and chains will be required after slight rain. KAWHIA. —An all-weather route is provided to Kawhia from Te Awamutu, there still being two miles of clay on the route from Otorolianga, but with this tine weather the clay section is in Quite good condition. RAG LAN. —The Raglan road has been very much improved during the winter and most of the worst cornei s have now been eliminated. APPEAL TO DRIVERS The Auckland Automobile Association issues an appeal to motorists to drive slowly through all settlements. Innumerable complaints are being received owing to danger to children. The association also-requests motorists to slacken pace and exercise cautiqn on all parts where workmen are engaged on repairs or reconstruction. The failure to exercise this care will necessitate the closing of certain roads with, the consequent discomfort through using detours.
