WHALING IN NORTH

END OF GOOD SEASON THRILL FOR ENGLISH VISITORS (From Our Oxen Correspondent) RUSSELL, To-day. The summer whaling operations in the North practically closed down last Saturday. No fewer than 29 whales, which proved to be in prime condition, were secured and towed to the boilingdown works at Whangaraumu. The fast up-to-date launch Ngaire, which was built in Auckland, has proved an unqualified success when chasing the whales. The whales, with their calves which are seen off Cape Brett, at this period of the year, are travelling southwards. The next whaling season commences about June 1 next; that is, when the whales are returning northwards. Captain Cook, the manager of the Bay of Islands whaling station, has taken the whaling steamer Hananui back to Russell, where she will remain at anchor until about the middle of May next. A man and his wife from England, who have been indulging in the thrilling sport of big game fishing, witnessed large whale being captured while they were fishing from a launch off Piercy Island. They were greatly excited watching the operations from the time the torpedo entered the whale until the huge monster was safely brought alongside the steamer Hananui.
