Obituary
MRS. MARIA JONES Mrs Maria Jones, who tiied in Auckland yesterday at the age of 34, was th a widow of the late Mr. George William Jones, and came to New Zealand with her husband and five daughters in ISS4, settling in Auckland. Mr. Jones, who died about live years ago, was one of the leading brethren at the Howe Street Mission Hall. Mrs. Jones is survived by four daughters. Mrs. G. Fountain, Mrs. E. C. Fountain, and Mrs. H. S. Conway, all of Auckland, and Miss R. Jones, of Coonor, India. The other daughter. Miss Esther Jones, died about eight years ago.
MR. W. G. BASSETT
j!bpirio associated with anganui lor 50 years, Mr. W. G. Bassett died there on Wednesday afternoon at th© age of SO years- He was one of the oldest New Zealand-born residents on the West Coast. Born at New I’lymouth, Mr. Bassett spent his early life on his fathers farm, and later worked as a carpenter on the Thames goldfields. He was then engaged in contracting for the Public Works Department and was connected with the construction of many railway works in the Wanganui and Taranaki districts. Mr. Bassett built the Poliangina Bridge near Ashhurst and then returned to Wanganui, starting business as a timber merchant. To-day this business is one of the largest on the West Coast. He was chairman of the Hospital Board for some years, and was a member of the Borough Council and the Harbour Board. He was a#o a member of the licensing bench for 27 years. He was a foundation trv.stee of the Methodist Church, and a foundation member of the Y.M.C.A. He tiad been in ill-health for some time. Mr. Bassett is survived by his wife, two sons and three daughters.
