TRANSFORMER’S CUP

RACING AT TE KUITI SPRINT TO LIAISON BULOLO WINS THE FINAL (Special to THE SUN) TE KUITI, Saturday. Favoured with beautiful weather, the Te Kuiti Racing Club’s annual fixture was successfully opened at its Te Kumi course to-day. There was a very fair attendance, and the going was in excellent order. There were no actual surprises during the day, but the two principal events saw the fancied division well routed. Transformer won the Cup, showing a dasli of his best form, while Liaison also made improvement on recent showings to capture the sprint. The totalisator handled £14,876, against £15,433 10s, when the last meeting was held on this course a couple of seasons ago. The club's previous fixture was held at Ellerslie, in Juno last, when £43,026 10s was handled. The meeting was efficiently conducted, and the club succeeded in providing an excellent afternoon’s sport for its patrons. Notes on the racing and details ox results follow: The Hurdles Nothing possessed a chance of beating Star of the East in the opening event. Stormy, of course, was a good favourite with £447, with fair support forthcoming also for Tinopono £264, Star of the East £lB4 and Lady Spalpeen £139, the last pair being at fine odds. Star of the ‘ East went to the front at the first hurdle, and passing the stands was clear of Abbot’s Delight, Tinopono, Lady Spalpeen and Teerapeen, with the favourite having only one horse behind him. Down the back Tinopono ran into second place, with Abbot’s Delight, Lady Spalpeen, Terrapeen, Master Arch, Pekatalii and Stormy following in that order, the last named still being well behind. Crossing the top and into the straight Star of the East held a commanding lead of five lengths over Tinopono and Lady Spalpeen, with Terrapeen, Master Arch and Stormy next in order. From this out it was a procession, Star of the East finishing five lengths in front of Lady Spalpeen, with the outsider Terrapeen another couple of lengths back. Master Arch was fourth, and Tinopono, Stormy, Abbot’s Delight, Hangawera and Soami next to cross the line. Awakino Hack Handicap Five defections left 16 runners in the hack sprint, in which Takutama and Roman Abbey were bracketed, although the book did not show it. There was money for Frothblower £292, Kerry Dance £287, and the bracket £272, with Hone Heke £153 at the head of the others. Upoko was badly left, Takutama going out fast from Lady Cynic, Sulla, Hone Heke, Frothblower and Flying Tresses. Lady Cynic soon took up the running and was in charge across the top, attended by Takutama, Frothblower, Sulla and Hone Heke. Lafly Cynic led into the straight from Frothblower, Takutama, Sulla and Flying Tresses. The leader compounded at the bottom of the straight, where

Frothblower and Takutama joined issue, a good finish resulting in favour of Frothblower by a neck. Sulla was three lengths away in third berth, just in front of Lady Cynic, who appeared as if she needed a race. Next to finish were Flying Tresses, Maurea, Always and Roman Abbey. The winner started from 16th position and registered a fine performance, the big marble probably being responsible for the nice price, although first favourite. Maiden Handicap Five defections left a field of eleven, and in a fair pool Monetize and Valroe monopolised the betting, the former carrying £525, or just one full ticket more than the actual winner. Of the others the best supported were Sports King £232 and Glena Bay £l4B. Archeval began best from Rose Arch, Valroe, Valuation, Ah Wera and Swiftlight, but it was not long before Rose Arch took up the running, to lead across the top from Valroe, Monetize, Ah Wera, Valuation and Archeval. Rose Arch was still making play in the van at the home turn, where she was attended by Monetize, Valroe, Ah Wera and Glena Bay. In the run up the straight the favourite failed to come on, and Valroe defeated Rose Arch by half a length. A length away was Glena Bay, and M6netize was fourth, and Valuation, Ah Wera, Joke Form and Sports King next in order. The favourite promises to do better next time out. The Kuiti Cup The defections of High Pitch, Papatu, Gold Rain and Bright Day left a bare two-dividend field for the big event. Betting was fairly well distributed, those having the call being Siaosi £629, The Lover £4lB, Schorr £390 and Transformer £343, the last-named coming in for surprisinglj’- good support. A good start saw Tinokoa the early leader, being attended by King

Smock, Siaosi, The Lover, Transformer and Schorr. This was the order pasv ing the stands, and along the back, too, where Tinokoa, King Smock and Siaosi were together three lengths in front of the others. Crossing the top Tinokoa, King Smock and Siaosi were on terms a length in front of The Lover, Schorr and Transformer, who were also in close order. The first three turned for

home together, followed by Schorr, The Lover and Transformer, the last-named putting in a run. Once heads were turned for home Transformer joined issue with Siaosi and then Schorr, Transformer winning a good ra.ee by hree parts of a length from Siaosi, with Schorr half a length back in third place. The Lover (who was pocketed badly at the home turn) was fourth, King Smock fifth, and Tinokoa last. Te Kumi Hack Nine came out for the hack mile, Hakanoa £427 winding up a first favourite from Ripon Abbey £338, Glenstar £273 and Brampton £247. Going out of the straight Whaka King was making the pace from Glenstar, Ripon Abbey, Brampton and Hakanoa, the last named being last and wide out at that. Along the back Glenstar and Ripon Abbey were in the van from Whaka King, Nurjahan, Brampton, Hakanoa and Arch Queen, and as they swung round the home turn Ripon Abbey had a bit the best of it over Glenstar, with Nurjahan, Brampton, Whaka King and Hakanoa following in order. Brampton and Glenstar had a good set-to over the last bit, the latter prevailing by half a neck. Three lengths back was Ripon Abbey, with Nurjahan fourth, and then came Whaka King and Hakanoa. The latter was very unlucky, being in a hopeless position shortly after the start, and he should give a better account of himself on Monday. Stewards’ Handicap With Waltzer and Quillfire taken out, there were only five runners in the sprint. Tea-Tim >. -was made a warm first fancy with £505 invested on his chances, with £357 on Town Bird, the ultimate winner, Liaison, being entrusted with £242. Betting took a fair range, however, and even the first fancy was at good odds. Town Bird got away badly, the favourite beginning with his customary brilliance from New Moon, Liaison and Macroom. In the first furlong Town Bird sprinted very fast and was soon up second to Tea Time, with New Moon, Liaison and Macroom following at the end of a

couple of furlongs. Town Bird led across the top from Liaison, Tea Time and New Moon, and also into the straight. Here Town Bird retired, Liaison coming through to win by a length from New Moon, with Tea Time another length back. Macroom was fourth and Town Bird last. By her win Liaison brought her winnings (firsts only) to exactly £SOO, and thus she is not eligible to compete in the Takapuna Plate next Friday, which is run under hack conditions as at time of starting. Puketutu Handicap Money was forthcoming for Mervette with the greatest confidence in the Puketutu Handicap, and she wound up carrying £738, against The Lamb’s £424, The Thorn’s £292 and Waltzer’s £153, the betting being cramped. The hot favourite duly scored in impressive style, and is obviously at the top of her form. Prince Lu was out making play early and he was in charge down the back from The Lamb, Tinoiti, The Thorn, Mervette, Waltzer, Bright Day and Te Koroke. Crossing the top the first three were still in the van, with Waltzer, Mervette, The Thorn and Bright Day following. Here the favourite made a run and was lying just behind Prince Lu at the home turn, following this pair being The Lamb and Waltzer. Once in line, Mervette came through to win very easily by two lengths from The. Lamb, with The Thorn a length and a-half further off. Waltzer was fourth, and Bright Day, Prince Lu and Te Koroke next. The last-named ran in the rear throughout. Otorohanga Handicap Of the 19 acceptors no less than 10 were scratched, and of the nine runners Bulolo and Bombarder were separated by only a few tickets, third choice being Whaka King, who, however, was at fair odds. Oscar and Bombarder were actually the first away, but Bulolo soon ran through and led Oscar, Flitter and Bombarder along the back. Oscar was a shade in front of Bulolo crossing the top, Bombarder and Flitter still being close to them, and in this omw turned for home. Bulolo was always doing it best in the run to the judge, and he defeated Oscar by half a length. Bombarder was three parts of a length back in third place, end the next home were Whaka King (who failed to show his customaryearly speed), Ossian and Flitter. The winner did his part well, and this, his first win, should soon be followed by others. Following are the results: KOPAKI HACK HURDLES Of £130; 11 miles 3 STAR OF THE EAST (G.
