SAILORS’ BRAWL
STRUGGLING IN STREET According to John Albert Samuelson, he was on the ground when the police stopped a fight in Queen Street on Saturday. He forgot to mention that there was another man underneath him. Samuelson, an American sailor aged 23, and William George Springett, an oiler, aged 27, was charged at the Police Court this morning with fighting in Queen Street. Springett, who had been bailed out, did not appear, having sailed with his ship. Samuelson pleaded not guilty. Constable Hannah saw the men fighting down near the wharves. He ordered them to go home, but they merely crossed the street and resumed the quarrel. Samuelson explained that he was trying to stop the fight and had no intention of taking part. “I was on the ground when the constable came over,” he said. Sub-Inspector McCarthy: Yes, but you were on top of Springett. Samuelson was fined £l, and Springett forfeited the amount of his bail, £2.
