COSTUME FACTORY FIRE
SATURDAY’S BIG BLAZE LOSS AND INSURANCES After an examination of the charred and damaged factory in Eden Terrace, Mr. .A. F. McArthur, managing director of the Manchester Costume Company, estimates the loss at £14,000. Saturday’s mid-day fire destroyed stock now valued at £9,500, damaged machinery valued at £2,500, and left the building in such a condition that £2,000 will be required to repair it. The insurances, all with Lloyd’s, were £I,OOO on the plant and machinery, £B,OOO on the stock, and £4,500 on the building. Mr. McArthur, who was in Helensville at the time of the outbreak, returned on Saturday afternoon and made arrangements for the resumption of work. A large annexe which escaped damage, and a rear room which suffered chiefly from smoke and water, will be installed with machines, and the employees, 40 of whom- are girls, will be back at work by Wednesday.
