FLOWERS AT NEW LYNN
GORGEOUS DISPLAY OF BLOOMS NEW SOCIETY’S FIRST SHOW The first show of the New Lyn i and District Horticultural Society was held in St. Thomas’s Hall on Saturday. Ml*. H. G. R. Mason, M.P., performed the opening ceremony and congratulated the committee and the district on the fine display. Special exhibits were staged by Messrs. N. McAndrew (florist’s work), A. W. Palmer (pot plants), Robert Wright (pot plants and cut flowers), Cutler and Meikle (roses), and Parker and Gardiner (pottery). The points prize cup for roses in the amateur section was won by Mr. E. S. Riggall. Championships were awarded by the judge, Mr. G. Mills, as follows: Roses (open), W. Kerr; roses (amateur), A. T. Reiman; gladioli, R. A. Jeffrey. Much credit is due to the committee of the society and especially to the energetic secretary, Mr. R. A. Jeffrey, and his assistant, Mr. W. Kerr. Following are the awards: Roses, open class—Distinct variety, hybrid perpetuae and hybrid teas, Messrs. Cutler and Meikle, 1; trusses, climbing, Mr. W. Keir; blooms in vases, Messrs. Cutler and Meikle, 1; bowl of roses, Mrs. H. Cutler, 1. Champion Rose—Mr. W. Keir. Open to gardeners and amateurs—Foliage plants, exotic ferns and native ferns, Mr. R. Wright; coleus in pots, Miss J. Wright, 1; 12 carnations or picotees, Mr. W. Keir, 1: 6 carnations or picotees, Mr. W. Keir, 1; vases antirrhinums, cut flowers, Mr. G. Lawson, 1; pelargoniums, Mr. R. Wright, 1; gladioli, four varieties, Mr. W. Keir, 1; gladioli, prim ulus, Mr. W. Keir, 1; pot phlox drummondi, Mr. G. E. Grey, 1; blooms, stocks, three varieties, Mr. M. Welc|i, 1; best table centre, white, Miss M. Jeffrey, 1; coloured, H. Thompson, 1; best tea cosy, any work, Mrs. F. V. Woolley, 1; best kitchen apron, Miss M. Lawson, 1; best nightdress, machine made, Miss Doris Horridge, 1. Preserves and Cookery—Best madeira cake, C. L. Sadgrove, 1; M. Jeffrey, 2; best jam sandwich, with butter, M. Robertson, 2; without butter, Mrs. H. J. Cutler, 1; best fruit cake, Mrs. Uffendell 1, Mrs. E. McKenzie 2; plain scones, Mrs. H. J. Cutler, 1; squares honey, Miss J. Wright, 1; H. J. Cutler, 2. Children’s Section— Flowers: Cut flowers, six varieties, Trevor Edgerley, 1; roses, three blooms, W. Armstrong, 1. Vegetables; Best cabbage, Ruth Holbrooke, i. A silver cup, donated by Mr. A. Crum, to be held annually or won outright by winning three years in succession, was won this year by Mr. E. S. Riggall, with 71 points. Mr. W. Whitbread came second with 58 points. ler and Mtlkle: ferns and palms, Air. *A. W. Palmer; cut flowers. Mr. R. V right; wreaths and bouquets, Mr. N. Me Andrew. Most of the vases in which the exhibits were staged were manufactured in New Lynn and were presented to the society by Mr. J. Gardner.
