DEER ON RANGITOTO
SUCCESSFUL STALKING 29 HEAD BROUGHT DOWN Deer- stalking on Rangitoto Island has been permitted for the last twelve months by the Rangitoto Domain. Board. So far 29 head have been killed. The vegetation near the summit suffered severely from deer and opossums. For instance, out of a clump of 70 clematis vines in one place, only three new survive. This spring, however, as a result of the thinning-dut of the deer some of the damaged vegetation shows signs of new life. The skins of the deer are taken by the stalkers, but the venison is a gift to anyone asking for it, and one or two of the regular shack-dwellers have been agreeably surprised to find venison left for them at week-ends. The prison authorities on the island have also been given meat for the use of the road-working gangs.
