“CLEAN-UP” WEEK TO HELP UNEMPLOYED
ORGANISATION PROPOSED CHAMBER OF COMMERCE ACTS With the object of assisting the unemployed of the city, the Auck- • land Chamber of Commerce proposes to organise a “Clean Up” Week, so that a spell of work will be found for every man needing it. This proposal was mentioned when a deputation of Auckland unemployed, headed by Mr. H. C. McCredie, waited on the chamber to-day for the purpose of ascertainng w*hat steps could be made toward the relief of the situation. Mr. McCredie said conditions on country relief works were deplorable, and he thought if men were paid half fares there would be no difficulty in encouraging them to go into the country. The deputation was thanked for its explanation of the situation, and it was then announced that the chamber would approach the Mayor to see if a “Clean Up Week” could be organised. Later in the morning Mr. McCredie told a Sun representative that no person was authorised to take round collection boxes on behalf of the unemployed. “We don’t collect money,” he added emphatically.
