BIG SHED CRASHES

WIND CAUSES COLLAPSE BUILDING AT FREEMAN’S BAY Several hundreds of pounds’ worth of damage was done on Sunday evening when a large steel shed framework which was being built up on the Steel Construction Company’s property in Sale Street, Freeman’s Bay, collapsed with a grinding crash, the network of twisted girders covering nearly a quarter of an acre. The building was intended to be an open shed to cover work being done for the new Auckland railway station. The frame of the building covered an area of about 150 ft by 60ft and the steel ridge-beam was 40ft from the ground. In the high wind on Sunday the roof frame buckled suddenly, and collapsing toward the centre, dragged the uprights over and bent the heavy steel beams like wire. The. part of the twisted frame which was sti% standing yesterday showed no further signs of falling. “The wreckage looks worse than it really is,” said Mr. W. J. Buckley, a member of the Construction Company, yesterday. He said, also, that the shed would be re-erected without difficulty in about three weeks.
