TWO RUSSIAN STORIES

“THE SHOP” AND “TARAS BULBA” Recently stories of two new United Artists’ pictures were selected. Both are based on Russian tales,* the first written by Alexander Pushkin, the second by Nickolai Gogol. Both pictures will be filmed with sound, with dialogue. Rod La Rocque, star of “Resurrection.” will be featured in “The Shop.” based on a Pushkin story. This same Russian poet’s “Dubrovsky” was adapted for Valentino’s “The Eagle.” which Clarence Brown directed and in which Vilma Blanky appeared. “Taras Bulba,” Gogol’s story of a Cossack and his two sons, will be filmed as a United Artists special. This work by the author of “Dead Souls” was once picturised in Europe.

“BEWARE OF MARRIED MEN” “Beware of Married Men,” a Warner Bros.’ comedy, starring Irene Rich, will shortly be .released in New eZaland. Miss Rich has one of the best roles of her career in Myra Martin, secretary to a divorce lawyer. Myra’s serenity is disturbed by the interest shown in Helene, her young sister, by one Sheldon, a married rounder, whose wife conies to Myra’s employer to get a divorce. Seeing the state of affairs, Myra disguises herself as a grey-haired social worker, and invades the Sheldon home, barely escaping detection by the irate wife. Sheldon has feigned a heart attack to delude Myra, and she has stayed to nurse him back to health, when his attentions become annoying. The younger sister now elopes with her lover, and finding that her former follower is annoying Myra, tries in turn to pay her back for her kindness.

Monto Blue, famous Warper Bros.* star, is coming to New Zealand shortly in “Across the Atlantic,” a thrilling romance of the air. The story is by John Ransome. Harvey Gates wrote the scenario, and the principals are Edna Murphy, Burr Mclntosh and Robert Ober. This exciting drama has to do with an overseas hero, who through injuries has lost his memory. He is beileved dead, and his brother is to marry his sweetheart, when the heroic ace escapes from the hospital, captures a plane, and flies to France in time to prevent the marriage. Great play, greatly acted.
