FIRE DESTROYS STORE
CHILDREN RUSHED TO SAFETY NO WATER HAMPERS BRIGADE (From Our Own Correspondent < OTAHUHU, To-day. The Sylvia Park store at the corner of the Mount Wellington highway and. Panama. Road, was destroyed by fii'o at 2.30 this morning. The premises were owned by -Mr. J. Rawson. of Ann Street. Devon port, and occupied by Mr. A. R. Beehre, and had five living rooms attached. Mr. Beehre was awakened by one of his children, sleeping in a bedroom off the kitchen, coughing violently. He found the house full of smoke and liad great difficulty in getting the four children out of the building. The fire is thought to have originated in a hot-water cupboard. stome delay occurred in notifying the Otahuhu Fire Brigade, and when it arrived tiie fire had a good hold. There was no water service, and the firstaid equipment was useless. The buildings were only erected two years ago, Mr. Beehre having occupied them for five months. Nothing was saved. The stock was insured for £6OO. but there was no insurance on the furniture.
