FINANCE & MARKETS

Market Firm

Insurances in Demand

A QUIET tone was registered on 'Change this morning. The turnover was small, but the market for all the better class securities was very firm.

Practically the only feature of interest in the insurance group was the coming in of sellers of Queenslands at 67s 6d. Sellers of most other shares in the section are hard to locate. The market for South British and New Zealand* is very firm. Renown Collieries advanced again ro-dav, when sellers at 18s found support at 17s. There is a very firm tone in the market, and there is a very strong inquiry for the scrip. New Zealand breweries are meeting with a strong inquiry, sellers at midday offering 44s 6d, a price 6d ahead of last week’s market.

Taranaki Oils are steady at last week’s closing price. It will be noticed elsewhere that the company is having considerable trouble at one of its Morere (Gisborne No. 1> bores and that things don’t look too bright at all from the shareholders’ point of view. Mining is very quiet. Waihis continue to meet with a steady demand. The gilt-edge market is in good tone, with Government war loans and stocks meeting with a particularly steady inquiry. Business at this morning's early call. —On ’Change: Taranaki Oil, 7s 6d. Reported: New Zealand Refrigerating (con.), 8s 7d.
