WHANGAREI TROTS

A. JULIAN’S TRIPLE CROWN

ROYAL 808 AND MEDUSA WIN TWICE

LABOUR DAY was celebrated at Whangarei with the staging: of the Northland Trotting Club’s annual fixture, which provided splendid sport. Climatic conditions were ideal, attracting- a record attendance. Despite heavy overnight rain the track was in good order, improving as the day advanced.

All roads in th© Whangarei district led to Park yesterday, which, was the popular rendezvous for all those seeking an enjoyable day’s sport, and expectations in this direction were realised to the fullest extent. The racing was interesting throughout, and notwithstanding the paucity of the fields in half the events carded (two races not having sufficient runners to ensure the second dividend, so enticing to many backers), speculation was very satisfactory, the sum of £11,523 being handled with alacrity by the totalisator staff for the day. The figures last year, when the function was held on December 10. were £12,286, being £763 in advance of yesterday’s investments. Gate receipts, however, on this occasion were approximately £l3O more than last year. Dargaville Handicap Nella Dillon £270, Warspite £192, Chrystal £174 and Vanity Boy £137 carried most money. Chrystal was slow getting away, Nella Dillon and Wee Thelma making the pace. Down the back Nella Dillon was leading Vanity Boy, Moko Fly, Chrystal, Black Ballin, Bell Dial and Patricia Bell. Nella Dillon and Vanity Boy were on terms into the straight, a couple of lengths ahead of Chrystal, with Moko Fly and Black Ballin following. Vanity Boy did best -from the turn, winning by a length and a-half from the favourite, with Chrystal a similar distance away, third. Moko Fly was next, and then came Black Ballin, Bell Dial and Patricia Bell. Whangarei Handicap This was a very disappointing race. Great Way £385 and Royal Bob £3lO were the best backed. At the start Great Way and Grattan Wilkes galloped, and Royal Bob was the only one that went at all evenly. Down the back he was leading by about a furlong and a-half, and eventually won by 150 yards from Golden Gate, Amberite being a length and a-half away, and Great Way fourth. First Out—First In Daytime and Lord Nepean were withdrawn from the Northland Trotting Cup, leaving a small field of four to face the starter, but despite the smallness of the field there was a good pool, Sunfish and The Abbey being in most demand, and when the bells ceased, Sunfish £ 503 was a slightly better favourite than The Abbey £490, Gold Dial being the outsider of the quartette. A good start was effected, but contrary to his usual custom, Nelson Tasker went, away tangling, losing a fair bit of ground. With half a mile traversed The Abbey was sailing along several lengths in front of Sunfish, Gold Dial and Nelson Tasker, and the latter going out of the straight appeared, to strike trouble. When the stands were reached the secon dtime, The Abbey had a good half dozen lengths lead. the others being bunched, but a little further on Nelson Tasker went / after the leader and reduced the gap. Crossing the top Sunfish and Gold Dial moved up and Nelson Tasker began to fade. Sunfish closed on The Abbey at the turn, but once in line for the judge. Jack Shaw’s candidate gave nothing a chance, and won in comfort by six lengths. Gold Dial was two lengths away third, with Nelson Tasker beaten off. Kawakawa Handicap The best backed horses were Warplane, £410; Chrystal, £317, and Nella Dillon, £3lO. Bell Dial and U.rsuline refused to go away. Nella Dillon and Crystal were the first to go out, followed by Te Hono and Royal Arcade. Passing the stand Te Hono, Nella Dillon, Mountain Dell, Royal Arcade, and Warplane was the order. Mountain Dell came out round the back, followed by Nella Dillon, AVarplane, and Te Hono. Nella Dillon was first into the straight, followed by Mountain Dell, Warplane, Vanity Boy, and Alice Axworthy. There was q great finish, with a neck between the first two, and one and a-half lengths between second and third. The time for the firsst horse was 2.58, 2.55 for the second, and 2.56 for the third. Waipu Handicap Medusa carried £6Bl, Nelson Dillon £223, and Abrudbanya £203. Nelson Dillon lost ground at the start. Medusa quickly went to the front leading past the stand from Horizon, Satinbird, Typist and Abrudbanya. Along the back Typist joined Medusa, followed by Profiteer and Horizon together, Nelson Dillon being still well back, Crossing the top Abrudbanya went up to Medusa and the two of them turned into the straight w*ell clear of Profiteer, Pitaroa and Horizon. Medusa came away to win nicely by a length, Profiteer two lengths back, third, followed closely by Horizon and Nelson Dillon, who put in a great run i*n the straight. President’s Handicap Passing the stand the order was Great Way, Royal Bob, Amberite, and Golden Gate. Going down the back. Royal Bob went to the front, and led past the stand the second time, 50 yards clear of Great Way, who was followed by Golden Gate, Amberite, Sebisca, and Ngatira. Along the back Royal Bob increased his lead to 100 yards, Golden Gate being at the head of Sebisca and Ngatira, with Great Way and Amberite breaking badly. Royal Bob came into the straight with a big lead, and, under a strong pull, won by two and a-half lengths. In a great race for second place Sebisca beat Ngatira by a neck. Golden Gate, close up, was third. The winner was first choice with £334, Ngatira having £3OS on his chance and Sebisca £197. Kaikohe Saddle Warplane. the favourite, carried £655 and Charming Pronto £249. Queen Betty refused to leave the mark. Warplane lead past the stand from Profiteer and Charming Pronto, who made up his ground very quickly. Going out of the straight Charming Pronto and Warplane ran wide, allowing Profiteer to draw level. Along the back Warplane went to the front, followed by Profiteer Charming Pronto and Ursuline. Warplane and Profiteer turned into the straight together. In a desperate finish Warplane lasted best to win by a length and a-half, Golden Hope befng four lengths away, third, and Charming Pronto next. Labour Day Handicap Te Hono, Medusa and Abrudbanya started quickly and passed the stand together, followed by Admiral Lock and Pitaroa. Along the back Abrudbanya

went to the front with Te Hono, Medusa Admiral Lock and Pitaroa next. Medusa and Abrudbanya turned for home together with Pitaroa well in front of the remainder. In the run home Medusa came away to win nicely by three lengths, Pitaroa finishing strongly beat Abrudbanya for second by a length with The Abbey well up The winner, who was penalised 12 yards, was favourite with £537, Sunfish £354, being next choice, with only £32 on Pitaroa. Cardinal Logan le Great Form WINS DOUBLE AT GREYMOUTI-I GREYMOUTH, Monday. The spring meeting of the Greymouth Trotting Club reached finality to-day in splendid weather, and before a large attendance. The totalisator returns for the day were £15,199, compared with £11,999 on the second day last year. The figures for the fixture reached £25,963, the 1927 total being £26,010. Excellent racing was witnessed each day, and this, added to the big fields, was a tribute to the work of the handicapper, Mr. G. S. Simpson. An outstanding feature of the sport was the dual success of the New Zealand Cup candidate Cardinal Logan, who repeated his performance of last October. Hendricksen had the gelding in great form, and his ability to handle the track was a big factor in his favour. The Nelson trainer Leo Berkett was well in the picture during the carnival, scoring three victories with Mr. T. B. Louisson’s Dilworth, and winning the Labour Day Handicap with the exWestport pacer.
