£5,000 SALVAGE
HARBOUR BOARD CLAIM “GALE NEVER IN DANGER” Press Association. WELLINGTON, To-day. That the steamer Gale was never c danger, nor asked for help, was ti* defence advanced by the Cantutur Steamship Company, when the Wanganui Harbour Board, claimed £5,000 as salvage in the Supreme Court yesterday, before Mr. Justice Sim. For the board, it was claimed tk the action of the tug Kahanui in toiing the Gale to port during a star on April 20 alone saved the vessel. Counsel for the defence stated tfa: the steamer’s anchors were holding and the sea was moderating. Defeatants had paid into court £SOO, upc: terms that no liability was admitte for payment of salvage services, as had offered to pay plaintiffs’ costs. Evidence was given for the plaintr that the Gale was in great danger. Tcaptain of the Kahanui the seemed to fly a flag replying “Yes" ’ an offer for help, but he had sir. found it was not that flag. In topinion, but for the Kahanui’s aid, *-■ Gale would have gone ashore. For the defence, it was stated ti ; witnesses would be called to state t?
