CAMBRIDGE METHODISTS DIAMOND JUBILEE The Cambridge Methodist Church is now celebrating its diamond jubilee. The chapel erected in Anzac Street 60 years ago was the first church building in Cambridge, and it is believed the first in the whole of the Waikato. At that time the Rev. Joseph Berry was in charge, and his district was a very extensive one. The present church, known as St. Paul’s, was erected in 1883, in Queen Street. The church has been in charge of many pastors. Included among the number are the following;—1868, Rev. Joseph Berry; 1869, Rev. J. W. Simonds (now of Auckland); 1871, Rev. J. Laws; 1873, Rev. W. G. Thomas; 1875, Rev. John Smith; 1878, Rev. W. J. Watkins; 1879, Rev. H. Bull; 1882, Rev. T. G. Carr; 1883, Rev. H. R. Dewsbury; 1886, Rev. J. S. Rishworth; 1889, Rev. C. H. Garland; 1892, Rev. J. H. Simmonds; 1895, Rev. L. Hudson; 1898, Rev. W. Cannell; 1900, Rev. S. J. Gibson; 1905, Rev. W. H. Beck; 1910, Rev. W. Tinsley; 1913, Rev. T. Trest.rial; 1916, Rev. G. S. Cook; 1919, Rev. J. D. McArthur; 1924, Rev. W. J. Elliott (now president of the Methodist Conference); 1927, Rev. J. W. Parker (present minister). The first public function in connection with the diamond jubilee celebrations was a grand musical recital, held at the Town Hall on Thursday. There was a very large attendance, and the excellent musical programme provided was greatly appreciated. Among the performers were the Hamilton Methodist Choir (under Mr. T. S. Webster), a number of Hamilton and Putaruru artists, and a sprinkling of Cambridge performers. It was one of the best musical events Cambrirde has had for a long time past, and the proceeds will be considerable. The celebrations will be continued for three Sundays, with several weeknight functions. The Rev. C. 11. Laws, 8.A., D.D., Principal of the Auckland Methodist Theological College, and the Rev. Professor Ranston, M.A., D.Litt., Auckland, will conduct special services during the celebrations. In connection with the celebrations it is hoped to effect considerable improvements to the church, a renovation scheme at a cost of approximately £SOO having been approved by the church officials. Already a considerable sum has been promised, and it is anticipated that the objective will be reached.
