ON HOTEL PREMISES BUT HAD NO DRINKS
FOUR MEN CHARGED j (Special to THE SUN J NEW PLYMOUTH, Friday. I “There is a distinctly unpleasant j flavour about these cases/* said Mr. j K. W. Tate, S.M., in reserving his decision in a case in which four men, James Giles, Api Thompson, Tutaki Wharemaha and Harry Willison, were charged with being unlawfully on the premises of the Urenui Hotel after hours. The licensee, Alfred James Ellinghcim, was charged with sellingliquor and keeping premises open for the sale of liquor. In a statement with regard to a fire, Willison had said he went to the hotel about 0 p.m., and remained there until 11 o’clock. He had had a few drinks, and could remember nothing clearly. In another statement Thompson and Giles both admitted being on the premises, but said they had obtained no drink. Tutaki said he had not been In the hotel. Mr. A. A. Bennett, for the defence, was granted an adjournment to enable him to quote authorities on a legal point. Willison stated he had been in the hotel to get his wages for bar-tending during the day, and had helped himself to drinks. Ellingham had been lying down at the time, and had not served him. Decision in the prosecution against Ellingham, the licensee, was reserved.
