REP. HOCKEY MATCH

WAIKATO V. AUCKLAND TO-MORROW’S BIG GAME To-morrow at the hockey grounds, Kemueru, the sixty-second contest for the New Zealand Challenge Shield will take place between Auckland (holders) and Waikato (challengers). The trophy lias been won or retained by the Auckland Association on 25 occasions, by Wellington on 19 occasions and by Manawatu on five occasions. Both Auckland and Waikato will be at full strength and provided fine weather prevails a sterling contest should be seen.

The Auckland side contains four New Zealand representatives in E. and C. Watts, Phillpots and Cole, while on the Waikato side there are three players who have worn the silver fern. They are Fletcher and the Spiers brothers. Fletcher, the Waikato goalkeeper, will be remembered by the thousands who saw him play against the Indian Army team in 1926 at the Domain and Eden Park, when his brilliant kicking and clearing went a long way toward retaining New Zealand’s prestige against the visitors, who had up till that time carried all before them. While it is hard to guage the calibre of the visitors it is certain that they have left no stone unturned to bring their best team to endeavour to capture the coveted shield.

Although it cannot be expected that the Auckland team will please everybody it must be admitted that the selector, Mr. W. Newsham, has got together a good side, particularly as regards the forwards, who are, without doubt, the best line Auckland has produced for some years. In the Imcks the team appears to be weaker, but this fault cannot be charged to the selector, as it is apparent that Auckland has not the backs playing to-day that it had some years ago. Nevertheless the Auckland team is expected to give a good account of itself and with the local enthusiasts it is regarded as a certainty that Auckland will win.
