TOURISTS KEPT AWAY
ACCOMMODATION AT FAULT “UNSATISFACTORY SYSTEM”
(THE SUN’S Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON", Thursday. Blaming the lack of satisfactory hotel accommodation in many places for the reluctance of a certain class of tourists to visit New Zealand, Mr. F. F. Hockly (Rotorua) said in the House of Representatives to-day that the Dominion's unsatisfactory licensing system was at fault. “Places where there should be accommodation haven’t got it,” he said, “while in places where the existing accommodation should be improved, it cannot be improved, and all because of the licensing system. “We can advertise, and we can do anything we like, but until we get proper licensing legislation we won’t attract the strings of tourists that we should get in this country.” While on the subject, Mr. Hockly expressed the view that the Tourist Department could not advertise too much. He also mentioned the fine effort of the people of Rotorua in subscribing £I,OOO to help pay for the metalling of the road through the Mamaku Bush.
