Last of the Season

GISBORNE’S FIRST DAY

Leading Jockeys’ Duels

THERE were several stirring finishes at Gisborne yesterday, and it was notable that the three leading horsemen. Green, Reed and Ellis, participated in some keen tussles. Green still leads by one over Reed and by sis over Ellis, the last-named being on two winners yesterday. The meeting concludes to-morrow (the prospects for the second day appear below), and this will ring down the curtain on the current racing season.

GISBORNE, Thursday. The opening day of the Gisborne Racing Club meeting was one of the most successful held at Gisborne for many years. The presence of many outside horses and some of the leading riders added greatly to the interest. Despite heavy over-night rain, the course was in good order, in only one place the track being slightly soggy. Fields were particularly good, and with hardly an exception, close finishes were the order of the day. Keen interest was centred in the rivalry of the leading horsemen. Green, Reed and Ellis. Ellis rode, two winning mounts and Reed one, but Green was unsuccessful. The totalisator handled £11,699, against £9,266. Park Hurdles

The defection of Royal Heather left nine starters in the Park Hurdles, Rahepoto being the popular fancy, witli Ballyfarnon and Jen in good demand. Merle, Cohesion and Chrishna led from a good start, Jen and Middleman being in close attendance, but the others were well back. Jen then joined the leaders, Cohesion dropping back a little, but later pulling to the lead. Middleman lost his rider. On the last bend the favourite and Comedy Prince made a bold bid, but Cohesion was well ahead here, and going well he gave a good exhibition of jumping and had a three lengths’ advantage at the post. Ballyfarnon left the bunch towards the finish, but his challenge was not serious. Merle was a poor with Crislina a close fourth. Maiden Plate Eighteen starters in the Maiden Plate (which was run without a division) caused some delay in getting the field away. Dishonoured, with Reed up, was a little better backed than Green’s mount, Abisogne. Lady Killham was fractious at the barrier, but finally a good start was effected. Abisogne jumped to the front, closely followed by Dishonoured and Kinsell. After a furlong Eostra took up the running, while Abisogne, apparently bumped, fell back ty sixth. Green held a place on the rails, however, and when straightened out for home Green

piloted his charge through the crush in fine style. Eostra still held the lead, however, but Dishonoured and Kinsell were coming fast, and they pulled to the lead in the straight, finishing in that order, while Abisogne, in a splendid run, also passed Eostra and was unfortunate to miss second money. Mangahera, Adri and Otene were all handy at the finish. Flying Handicap King YVanga’s success in the Flying Handicap was the surprise of the meeting. The public again followed Reed and Green on Fee Simple and Dave respectively. These two set the pace from the start, followed by King Wanga and Nightsong, the latter taking the lead after a furlong. Approaching the straight. King Wanga overhauled Nightsong, and giving a convincing display, came home a winner by two and a-half lengths. Cool Card, who was behind him at the straight entrance, made a spirited finish, beating Dave in the tussle for second place. Superb King was fourth and Fee Simple next. Gisborne Steeplechase The defection of Bahadur and Nowra left a field of five for the Gisborne Steeplechase, while the fences accounted for the elimination of Progressor and Bendower before the finish. Garzon, Highway and Master Arch led out from the barrier, ITogressor being last, and later lie spilled his rider at the double, but continued hopelessly behind the field to complete the course. Gcirzon was not jumping well until the pace was cracked on, but Highway was fencing bautifully, and Master Arch was going steadily all the way, with Bendower uncertain. Garzon took up the running from* Highway six furlongs from home, the latter lagging behind. Bendower and Master Arch made a final effort, but the former came to grief at the last fence, leaving Master Arch to contest the finish with Garzon, the latter winning by a head, with Highway three lengths away. Hack Flat—First Division Chipchase failed to parade for the first division of the Hack Flat. Reed’s mount, Dreamy, was a red-hot favourite, with Singleton, Rapiata and Rongo next in demand. Bold Front led out from Eastbourne, Singleton and Rapiata, the rest strung out, with Royal Elm well behind. Singleton took the lead coming into the straight, when the field was well bunched. Hakaroa and Dreamy challenged, but Singleton was never troubled, coming in two lengths ahead of Dreamy, with Rakaroa a close third, followed by Nightwitch, Cherry Girl and Bold Front. Second Division Eleven horses faced the barrier in the second division, Essential being the only non-starter. Plimmerton and Takutama got the best of the start, with Blue Jay close behind. First Prince was soon battling with Takutama for the lead, and Toka, who started well, found the pace too willing and dropped back. Tea Lady and Kinsell were holding on well in the bunch and were never far out. First Prince took the lead before reaching the straight, but around the corner Plimmerton cracked on speed and caught up to the leaders. Tea Lady and Nahi made determined bids in the last furlong, and Tea Lady pulled to the front in the last half furlong, to win by half a length, with Plimmerton and Nahi close up. Tramway Steeplechase

Five withdrawals from the Tramway Steeples left only five to compete, Comedy Prince, Royal Heather and Handy being best supported, in that order. Nowra started badly, Handy showing the way to Comedy Prince and Rahepoto. Royal Heather moved up to displace Rahepoto at the western bend. Handy, jumping nicely, maintained his lead, with Royal Heather, jumping well, close up, and Comedy Prince and Nowra some lengths behind. In the back stretch Nowra moved up and then the five bunched. Handy and Comedy Prince drew away, with Royal Heather in close attendance. The last-named touched a fence and gave Rahepoto third position. Comedy Prince gained on Handy in a thrilling finish, but the latter passed the post with, half a length to spare. Rahepoto was three lengths away. Winter Oats Cohesion was the only defection in the Winter Oats, leaving No Favours and Wanderlust the principal public

fancies, with Addlepate and Pita well liked. Pita and No Favours went to the front at the outset, Pita having a slight advantage past the stand, with Wanderlust, Pal© Star and Othon next, Patuki bringing up the rear. There was practically no change of positions until in the back stretch, where Patuki spurted and improved his position rapidly, and at the half-mile he was up with the leaders, Pita and No Favours. Pita still had the best position, but once straightened up for home, Patuki issued his challenge, and in a great finish sustained his effort long enough to win by a short head from No Favours, Wanderlust coming along the stretch into third place. TO-MORROW’S CARD GOOD FIELDS ALL ROUND Three Auckland horses went to participate at Gisborne yesterday, and Northerners were rather hopeful of three dividends going their way. However, it was not to be; rather was it a tragedy. Bahadur failed to see the post, and has not been accepted for to-morrow, so that apparently something is the matter with the jumper. Rahepoto and Dave had to be content ■with tliird money, but they should shape better to-morrow, particularly the latter. The following promise to come in for support in their engagements tomorrow : Gisborne Hurdles: Cohesion and Rahepoto. Trial Handicap: Dishonoured and Abisogne. Waikanae Handicap: Wanderlust and No Favours. Second Hack Flat: Singleton and Essential. To Hapara Steeplechase: Comedy Prince and Rahepoto. Turanganui Hack Handicap: Dreamy and Abisogne. Farewell Handicap; Dave and Fee Simple. The list of to-morrow’s acceptors is as follows:
