Old Furniture Brings Big Prices

Period furniture is not greatly in demand in Auckland, but seven pieces sold under the hammer this week brought the sum of £.112 10s.

They were the property of Mr. K. C. Cox, of Mount St. John Avenue, Epsom, and were sold by George Walker, Ltd. A handsome and strange old Spanish table in mahogany, with a scissors extension, and 12 legs, was the prize of the sale and it brought £4» 10s. This piece, dated about 1790. closes up from a substantial dining size to 4ft by 2ft, by means of the scissors mechanism. An old English buffet in Sheraton* style mahogany, was sold for £33 10a. A Chippendale china cabinet with the original glass in it and dating between 1780 and 1800, was sought after, and the buyer paid £32 for it. A graceful ball and claw sofa table in mahogany (1780), fetched £2l. and a mahogany bow-fronted chest of drawers (1780-18001 was sold for £2l 10s. Two lesser pieces were a Jacobean* style side table, sold for £lO, and a mahogany writing table in Victorian design, which brought £9.
