PRINCE EDWARD

“SALLY IN OUR ALLEY”

“Sally In Our Alley,” a picture based on the popular old ballad, will be shown at the Prince Edward Theatre this evening with Shirley Mason in the leading role. In the screen story Sally, is a tenement orphan, who is adopted by three kindly foster-fathers, a Scotchman, a Jew, and an Italian. They all live in perfect harmony—they are interested in each other. The fosterfathers have their common problem in caring for Sally. Contrasted with the spirit of love and tolerance of the tenement home is that of social pretension and coldness in the mansion where Sally’s wealthy aunt lives. There is no kindly interest here. The aunt wants Sally to cut off all connection with her humble friends and her plumber sweetheart—and tries to accomplish her end by putting Sally’s friends in a false light. Playing opposite Miss Mason in the leading male role of Jimmie Adams, the plumber, is Richard Arlen. Alec B. Francis, William. H. Sltrauss, Paul Panzer, Kathlyn Williams, Florence Turner and Harry Crocker complete the cast. “The Whirlwind of Youth,” which will also be shown, is a story of a sheltered girl’s first love and disillusion in Paris. Lois Moran is the star. The third attraction on the programme of the Prince Edward Theatre this evening is the personal appearance of Jerry, the fighting kangaroo. This versatile animal stages a most realistic boxing match. GRAMMAR SCHOOL BALL The annual ball of the Auckland Grammar Schools Old Boys and Old Girls’ Associations will this year be held at Dixieland, Point Chevalier, probably on September 6, instead of at the Auckland Grammar School as formerly.
