DRAINAGE FOR BIRKENHEAD
COUNCIL ADOPTS ENGINEER’S SCHEME
The rates for the ensuing year were struck last evening at a special meeting of the Birkenhead Borough Council. the Mayor, Mr. E. G. Skeates, presiding. The rates are to be 6ld in the £, which is an increase of Jd over last year. The increase is rendered necessary by the extra hospital levy and the water loan recently carried. The council considered a drainage scheme, in committee, with Mr. F. E. Powell, engineer, and on resuming open council the following resolutions were carried unanimously:—(l) “That the drainage scheme as submitted by Air. F. E. Powell at a cost of £45,000 be submitted to a poll of the ratepayers for approval; (2)That Mr. F. E. Powell be appointed the engineer to carry out the work, that Mr. Powell prepare the necessary plans, and obtain the Harbour Board’s approval, and also submit the proposals to the Loans Board for its approval.
The scheme adopted will include all the thickly-populated area from the wharf to Roseberry Avenue, and as far as Pupuke Road on the other portion, thus enabling nearly 600 properties to be connected up. They are of a rateable value of £224,374. This will mean a special rating area, and to cover interest and sinking fund, a drainage rate of about 3ld in the £ will have to be struck
