In the course of his speech at the annual meeting of the Eastern Telegraph Company. the chairman and managing director. Sir John DenisonPender, said he had every hope of being able to announce in the near future the satisfactory conclusion of the negotiations for the merger of the company with the Marconi Wireless Company. “It has been an anxious time/’ said the chairman. “However, if it results in the formation of a merger company comprising the whole of the overseas telegraphic communications of the Empire, in maintaining our connections with foreign countries, in suitable protection for the public as regards rates, and in a reasonable return for the money, mobility and efficiency of the service, one of the greatest advances in British commercial enterprise will have been achieved. It will mean the retention of the British Commonwealth’s predominance in the world of communications.”
