League Referees Not To Be Paid

TIME NOT OPPORTUNE DISCUSSION BY COMMITTEE At the meeting of the Management Committee of the Auckland Rugby League last evening, the chairman, Mr. G. Rhodes, reported that the Advisory Committee set up to go into the question thought the time was not yet opportune to pay referees. CONSIDERABLE discussion followed the explanation of the chairman regarding the required attendance or not of the referee in cases which come before the Judicial Committee. Mr. Solomon said the system was not giving satisfaction. He quoted an example recently in which he alleged there had been a miscarriage of justice. Mr. B. Longbottom stated that the remuneration of referees would solve the whole problem. The league would then have definite control over them. Mr. W. Davidson said the league already had control over the referees. Too often lately the Management Committee had been dictated to by subsidiary bodies. Mr Gregory said it would cost only £ 2 a week to pay referees on Carlaw Park. Mr. Rhodes was of the opinion, however, that it was only fair that all referees should be paid, if any were to be remunerated. Also the league would have to pay them sufficient to make it worth their while to do as the league desired. A notice of motion was given to rescind the minute on the “books regarding required attendance of referees at Judicial Committee meetings. The Referees’ Association forwarded the. names of Messrs. L. Bull, W. Mincham and R. Rodgers, which the committee sent on to the New Zealand Rugby League as candidates for the Auckland v. Canterbury, and the North v. South Island matches. The New Zealand Council advised that it had appointed Mr. R. T. Hill, of Taupiri, to referee the representative match on Saturday, Auckland v. Canterbury. This was in accordance with its policy of appointing outside referees for representative matches. Mr. W. Mincham, the Auckland League Referees’ Association representative on the Management Committee, protested against the council’s action. “Referees referee all the year in club matches and are then knocked out for the representative matches.” The rule did not state that an outside referee must be appointed.
